SUMMARY:Electric Works presents Elaine Buckholtz’s "Easy Rider"
DESCRIPTION:Electric Works' artist Elaine Buckholtz’s Easy Rider is a site-specific\, light-based work at ArtPadSF 2013. Buckholtz\, know for her colorful and subtle interactions with video\, print and sound\, will change the atmosphere of the fair with this poetic\, playful and just-barely-present work. In Easy Rider the Phoenix Hotel’s usual outdoor lighting in front of each gallery room is replaced with a soft pink light bulb. Lavender light projected from above the pool hits the water at an angle that activates both its surface and depths. The lit swimming pool creates a center point of the Phoenix’s outdoor space and the gauzy ambient light.

SUMMARY:swissnex presents "Snowsteps"
DESCRIPTION:Snowsteps\, a new experimental electronic duo formed by Jorge Bachmann and Yoann Resmond\, will perform an auditory and visual interpretation of ArtPadSF. Creating music of contrast in elements and methods\, the duo shapes textures that fuse consonance and dissonance\, enriched by analog synth modulation and punctuated by glitch interferences. SUMMARY:moniquemeloche presents Carrie Schneider’s "Burning House"
DESCRIPTION:In March of 2012\, Carrie Schneider unveiled Burning House\, a series of fifteen large-scale color photographs of a house engulfed in flames. Standing alone on an island in the middle of a lake\, the small house burns eternally\, capturing the fire at different times of day\, in various seasons and weather conditions. Concurrent to the production of this series\, Schneider produced an exquisite Burning House film that will premier in the US at ArtPadSF 2013. The series was made over the course of 2 years with the artist building\, burning\, and rebuilding this structure on a remote island in Wisconsin. In an attempt to defy the laws of entropy\, the film presents an endless loop of the fifteen burning houses rising like a phoenix in a hypnotic and deliberate sequence.

SUMMARY:Gray Area Foundation for the Arts presents "I just wanna hold your hand"
DESCRIPTION:Play can transform an environment. In I just wanna hold your hand\, two metal hands are mounted to the wall. When two or more individuals complete the circuit they provoke audiovisual responses. The level of interactivity is determined by the flow of electricity through the individuals. The interaction is tailored to the installation; the core tool is the Arduino platform that responds to sensory data in the environment\, and activates processing projections generated from the outside interactions. I just wanna hold your hand will be located in the courtyard of the Phoenix Hotel.

SUMMARY: Gallery Wendi Norris presents Ranu Mukherjee
DESCRIPTION:Ranu Mukherjee's Radiant Chromosphere (move towards what is approaching)\, is a short animated projection of a fictional event\, evoking transformation of a once agriculture based economy into a technologically based one. The film is composed around a Tree of Life which assembles itself from the detritus of a solar storm that comes through the orchards\, gathering the objects which have been brought there by the people of many nations into a swirling tactile event. It is a reflection on the sun’s energy as it is deeply connected to the economic and social histories as well as speculative narratives of Silicon Valley. Radiant Chromosphere (move towards what is approaching) will be projected on the wall adjacent to the Phoenix Hotel.

SUMMARY:Warholian presents "Unibirth" a performance art piece by Aoi Yamaguchi and Sebastian Plano
DESCRIPTION: Warholian is proud to present Japanese calligraphy artist Aoi Yamaguchi\, alongside composer Sebastian Plano and contemporary dancers Celine Alwyn and Emmaly Wiederholt\, in her performance of “Unibirth” at ArtPadSF 2012. Unibirth is a live performance art project which is conceptualized\, directed and performed by Aoi Yamaguchi\, in collaboration with Argentinian contemporary composer Sebastian Plano\, contemporary dancer Celines Alwyn and Emmaly Wiederholt. Inspired by unifying concepts of “universe” and “birth”\, Unibirth celebrates the reincarnation of lives that exist in nature and signifies the infinite cycle of the universe\, incorporating the physical movement of calligraphy\, contemporary dance\, sounds and visuals. The dancer represents the spirit of humanity - the music\, representing the earth’s ensemble\, and the poetry\, written on the bodies and garments by the artist\, awaken the spirit from long hibernation. Blessed in the brush strokes and divine sounds\, the newborn spirit will be sublimed into the nature’s resonance. Warholian is a press-based arts publication situated in San Francsico\, California. Warholian focuses on both emerging artists\, and the communities that emerge around their particular aesthetics. The website is headed by Editor in Chief/Head Photographer Michael Cuffe and has become known as one of one of the formost names covering the world of contemporary art and culture. Warholian presents an unprecedented view of the current art scene\, it’s patrons\, and the inspiring figures within it. Born and raised in Hokkaido\, Japan in 1984\, Aoi Yamaguchi has been trained to master the basics of calligraphy by learning under the Master Zuiho Sato since the age of 6\, while refining her knowledge and skills. She is a recipient of numerous awards including the First Place prize from the Minister of Education at 44th Asahi Calligraphy Nationwide School Exhibit\, Superior First Place at 33rd National Students Calligraphy Exhibition and others that are known as the supreme prizes at competitive public exhibitions. As a noteworthy event\, she was nominated to participate in the group\, 4th Hokkaido Elementary and Junior High Students Visit to China in 2000\, representing the country of Japan and participated in calligraphy exchange sessions at Palace of Pupils of China. Her works show her exploration in juxtaposing the traditional Eastern classics and her contemporary artistic expressions\, as well as her unique ambition of transforming two-dimensional art of Japanese Calligraphy into the art of physical expression through performances. In 2008\, she initiated a Japanese art crew as known as Surreality in Reality (SIR) based in San Francisco Bay Area\, aiming to provide opportunities for local Japanese artists to share their artistic creations internationally. Currently living in Oakland\, she has been working on her unique calligraphy installation\, exhibition\, live performances\, custom logo designs and art works globally\, as she pursues her career to preserve traditional arts with music in the modern world.

SUMMARY:Black Rock Arts Foundation (BRAF) Benefit Party
DESCRIPTION:BRAF is about art. It’s about art that inspires action\, builds community\, and causes viewers to take a moment to reflect on their immediate surroundings. Since 2001\, BRAF has illustrated that art can thrive outside the walls of museums and galleries\, in public places that encourage direct involvement with the people who encounter it. BRAF consistently seeks to include an expanding universe of people to participate in the creation\, presentation\, and experience of art. BRAF partners in many ways with individuals\, community groups\, other foundations\, and city and governmental agencies to accomplish this work. Separate tickets are required for this event. SUMMARY:Exray's and Future Twin, Presented by Noise Pop
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, May 20\, 3:30PM The Bay Area's beloved Noise Pop will be presenting special poolside performances by indie musicians\, Exray's and Future Twin\, to close out the fair. Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp are the duo behind Exray’s murky electro-pop. Even if you’ve never heard of them you might have already heard an Exray’s track or two. “Hesitation” was featured in The Social Network\, and the band has performed with Toro Y Moi\, tUnE-yArDs\, Cloud Nothings and Pictureplane. Their music manages to straddle a line somewhere between low-fi and futuristic. A handful of music videos they’ve produced also explore these themes. Future Twin was brought together by the all girl moped gang The Lockits. They became fast friends and were soon waxing synth songs\, huffing gasoline and makeing shred tents (the ‘e’ stands for everyone.) Since then situations have transpired\, people were motivated to get up or get out\, landslides shifted the conceptual mindscape…but adaptive by design this pirate ship just keeps sailing. We design our lives towards who we want to be\, becoming our own future twin.

SUMMARY:Art Scan Fair Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Bean Gilsdorf Art Scan Fair Meditation is a guided audio tour of the ArtPadSF art fair that combines the warmly authoritative narrative of museum audio tours with the language and sonic cues of guided meditation recordings. This participatory work will be available to fair attendees in the form of pre-recorded MP3 players and headphones that can be checked out during the final day of the fair. Unlike traditional audio tours\, Art Scan Fair Meditation uses the juxtaposition of different linguistic systems to bring awareness back to the human body moving through the space of the fair and asks listeners to reconsider their presence in the context of art and capitalist enterprise. About Bean Gilsdorf: Using strategies such as appropriation and recontextualization\, Bean Gilsdorf's art practice explores American images and cultural artifacts. From textile flags to videos to performance\, Gilsdorf's work makes use of parody and unexpected juxtapositions to examine systems of gender\, language and representation. Gilsdorf received an M.F.A. from the California College of the Arts in 2011. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts and the American Textile History Museum\, as well as exhibition spaces in Poland\, England\, Italy\, China and South Africa. Gilsdorf is currently a 2011-2012 Graduate Fellowship Resident at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito\, California.

SUMMARY:Where Does Art Breathe?
DESCRIPTION:Panel Talk: Where Does Art Breathe? How do institutions generate and foster forward-thinking creative projects? How do these Bay Area leaders coalesce their own interests\, the specifics of a target audience and the forward momentum of current artistic production to form an overarching artistic vision that is open and inspired? Is it possible for art to breathe given the parameters set by institutional goals and funding requirements? We’ll talk about how they define their organizations’ creative missions and share recent artistic projects that exemplify those goals. SUMMARY:The Loose Interpretations Sing Songs of Water
DESCRIPTION:For the Opening Night of ArtPadSF 2012\, The Loose Interpretations take over the Phoenix Hotel's pool to sing songs of water; rivers\, tubs\, and tears all manifest in their sonic odes. This all-female acapella group features fourteen fun and talented women who will rock the ArtPadSF opening night with an arrangement of sailor suits\, popular songs\, and a high-energy sense of humor. About The Loose Interpretations: Heralded as San Francisco's best all-female acapella group (and not just because it's the only all-female acapella group)\, The Loose Interpretations has been wowing the Bay Area since way back in 2004. Eight years! The 14-member group can be found singing on street corners\, in bars\, at concert halls\, and even during dinner. The Loosies mainly sing original arrangements of pop covers\, though their repertoire spans several decades and musical genres\, from Gershwin to Cyndi Lauper\, Madonna to the Postal Service\, and even a little Bon Jovi (may he forgive them).
